And your Lord inspired to the bee, “Take for yourself among the mountains, houses, and among the trees and [in] that which they construct.

Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]”. There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought. Al-Nahl, 68-69

“The World Health Organization regards honey as a potentially valuable demulcent for the treatment of cough.12 Honey is a sweet viscous liquid with a complex chemical composition of carbohydrates, free amino acids, vitamins, trace elements and flavonoids. It also contains compounds that function as antioxidants. It is said to possess antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.13,14

The Benefits of Honey

Studies of the antimicrobial effect of honey have demonstrated its broad-spectrum antimicrobial actions against various gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is also active against common bacteria found in the upper respiratory tract such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus faecalis, amongst others.14Honey has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of cough and is used in modern medicine to treat wounds and aid healing processes.15 The use of honey is prohibited under the age of one due to poor immunity against Clostridium Botulinum, a potential contaminant.16,17” (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3718232/#ref17)

If honey is taken on an empty stomach, it takes away phlegm and cleanses the stomach, clearing away waste matter and restoring the correct temperature. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to drink honey mixed with water on an empty stomach, and this is the secret of maintaining good health that no one can understand except one who is intelligent and blessed. (Zaad al-Ma’aad, 4/33, 34)

Ingredients

  • 1-2 tablespoon of raw (unpasteurized) honey - any kind works well
  • 1 glass of water

Instructions

Put honey in the glass of water at night, cover it and let the water dissolve the honey overnight. (Do not leave spoon in the water overnight). Drink the honey water at the pre-dawn meal (suhur if you are going to fast) or before you have your 15-30 minutes before breakfast.

For an enhanced, flavourful beverage that you can serve the entire family that is nutritious, healing and better than any store bought drink you can think of, pour 1 cup of honey into a jug of water (6-8 cups), add slices of organic oranges, lemons and mint leaves. Leave it overnight to infuse.

Serve cold.

Notes

Honey water is really easy to make, and it's the type of drink that you can sip on all day long! However, it does need a good few hours to sit, so I suggest leaving it overnight for at least 2 - 10 hours.
